Licensing Guide
Who will not need a Security licence?
Remember, it's not your job title that is important. It is the work that you actually do that determines whether you need a licence and the specific type of licence that you need.
The following will not require a licence:
- A steward employed directly in-house and carrying out guard duties (except if you working on licenced premises, in which case you will need to hold a Door Supervisors licence)
- Working in an official capacity at a public venue or event, checking tickets, giving directions, providing information and assisting the general public.
Note: Football Clubs and WNSL are exempt from their personnel being required to hold a SIA licence. However, the FA, Football League and Football authorities have assured the SIA and the government that all in-house stewarding personnel will undertake formal accredited training and that any stewards that operate in licenced areas of the stadium will hold SIA licences. For example if you were required to work in the executive / VIP lounge of WNSL or CFC, the club must ensure that you are SIA licenced.
